But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah,
are only a small village among all the people of Judah.
Yet a ruler of Israel will come from you,
one whose origins are from the distant past.
Do you think these words echoed in the minds of Mary and Joseph as they traveled to Bethlehem for the census? Surely they had heard the story read from the scrolls. Knowing this would be a long journey, so late in her pregnancy, I’m sure the words flitted around in the minds of the young couple. Joseph returning to the land of his origins, possibly excited to see distant family members. Mary knowing the time of her delivery drawing near, feeling nervous butterflies at the thought of being a mother.
With barely 2 weeks until Christmas day, families will soon start traveling. Reuniting with family members that they do not see often. Meeting brand new family members. As you travel, or prepare for those traveling to you, think about the long journey that Mary and Joseph made. See if you can feel some of their excitement in your heart for the coming Christ, and then share that excitement with your family and friends.
